## Overview

An important Roman town and later a medieval power, Verona sits on a loop of the Adige on the road between Milan and Venice, and its long history layers Roman, medieval and Renaissance buildings in a compact centre. The Roman arena on Piazza Bra still stands nearly whole and hosts a famous summer opera festival. Prosperous and elegant, the city trades on its monuments, its Shakespearean fame and its position as a gateway to Lake Garda.

## Highlights

The Arena, a Roman amphitheatre in the heart of the city, fills with opera under the stars each summer. The market square of Piazza delle Erbe and the frescoed Piazza dei Signori hold the medieval city, and Juliet's House with its balcony draws the crowds nearby. The castle and bridge of Castelvecchio and a climb to Castel San Pietro for the river view round out a stay.
