## Overview

The town was built in the early 1980s to move accommodation off the base of the rock, and it holds about a thousand residents plus visitors. Ayers Rock Resort operates the hotels, campground, supermarket and the shuttle that loops the town and the park entrance. Free evening activities — bush yarn talks, guided garden walks, a nightly bush food demonstration — run at the town square.

## Highlights

The Wintjiri Arts and Museum and the Maruku Arts working studio show Anangu artists at work, with sales going back to the communities. The town's dune viewing platform gives a free sunset over Uluru and Kata Tjuta without joining a tour. Buy fuel and groceries here — the next town is 200 kilometres away.
