## Overview

One of the world's great cities, London spreads along the Thames as a patchwork of villages grown together, mixing two thousand years of history with finance, culture and constant change. Its landmarks span the medieval Tower, the royal palaces, the great parks and a skyline of new towers, while its free national museums are among the finest anywhere. Grey and busy but endlessly deep, it rewards travellers with monuments, markets, theatre and a different world in every neighbourhood.

## Highlights

The Houses of Parliament and Big Ben, Westminster Abbey and Buckingham Palace anchor the royal and political heart, with the Tower of London and Tower Bridge downstream. The British Museum, the National Gallery and the Tates lead a world of free museums, and the West End fills the evenings with theatre. Markets like Borough and Camden, the parks and a walk along the South Bank round out a stay.
