## Overview

The city runs together with Ampenan, the old port, and Cakranegara, the former Balinese royal seat, in one continuous strip inland from the west coast. That history is still legible: Ampenan keeps Dutch and Chinese shopfronts near the waterfront, and Cakranegara holds the Balinese temples and water palace of the kingdom that ruled Lombok before 1894. Mataram itself is the administrative and shopping half, with the provincial museum and the great mosque.

## Highlights

The Islamic Centre mosque, with its patterned dome and tall minarets, is the city's landmark and open to visitors outside prayer times. Pura Meru in Cakranegara is the largest Balinese temple on Lombok, and the Mayura water palace beside it keeps its pavilion in an artificial lake. The provincial museum is the best single introduction to Sasak weaving and metalwork. It is the practical base for the island's west, and the airport bus and inter-city bemos all run from here.
