## Overview

Grown rich as a port for Atlantic trade, Liverpool built a grand waterfront of docks and shipping palaces, and it kept a strong, distinctive identity through the decline and revival that followed. It is above all a city of music — the Beatles came from here — and of football, split between two famous clubs. Warm and quick-witted, it pairs its maritime heritage and museums with a lively cultural and nightlife scene along the Mersey.

## Highlights

The restored Albert Dock and the Pier Head, with the Royal Liver Building and the waterfront museums, are the heart of the old port. Beatles fans follow the story from the Cavern Club to the childhood homes, and the two twentieth-century cathedrals crown the ridge above. The football grounds of Anfield and Goodison and a lively night out complete a stay.
