## Overview

Crete stretches long across the southern edge of the Aegean, a spine of high mountains falling to a coast of harbours, beaches and old towns. Venetian and Ottoman rule left their mark on its cities, while inland the villages, gorges and highland plateaus keep an older rural life. It is warm for much of the year and large enough that a single trip only samples it, from the Minoan ruins to the wild south coast.

## Highlights

The palace of Knossos outside Heraklion is the great Minoan site, its finds gathered in the city's archaeological museum. Chania and Rethymno keep picturesque Venetian harbours and old quarters, and the Samaria Gorge offers a long walk down to the Libyan Sea. The pink sands of Elafonissi and the lagoon of Balos are among the island's famous beaches, best reached with an early start.
