lead: "La Cité du Vin is the wine museum on the riverfront, opened in 2016 in a building meant to evoke wine swirling in a glass. It covers wine worldwide rather than Bordeaux alone, which surprises visitors expecting a château."

## Overview

The permanent tour is largely sensory and digital — smell stations, projected landscapes, film of growers in twenty countries — and the ticket includes a glass of wine in the belvedere on the eighth floor. Bordeaux itself is treated as one region among many, deliberately. The building's aluminium and glass curves have divided opinion in a city of eighteenth-century stone.

## Highlights

The belvedere at 35 metres gives the widest view of the river bend and the city, and the tasting there is included. Allow two hours for the permanent route; the audio guide runs in eight languages. Combine it with the wine bar and the shop, which stocks 800 wines from 70 countries.
