## Overview

Alone among Indonesia's islands, Bali is largely Hindu, and daily offerings, temple festivals and processions colour every village. The south holds the beach resorts and surf of Kuta, Seminyak and the Bukit peninsula, while the cooler interior climbs through rice terraces to Ubud, the centre of Balinese art and dance. Volcanoes rise in the north, and the island is small enough to combine beach, culture and mountains in a single trip.

## Highlights

The sea temples of Tanah Lot and Uluwatu stand on their rocks above the surf, and the mother temple of Besakih sits on the slopes of Mount Agung. Ubud offers the palace, the monkey forest, dance performances and the rice terraces of Tegalalang nearby. The southern beaches carry the surf and nightlife, while the north and east keep quieter shores, dive sites and the volcanoes.
