## Overview

One of the world's oldest cities, Athens has been continuously inhabited for thousands of years, and its classical monuments stand among the concrete of a metropolis of over three million. The centre is compact and walkable, wrapped around the Acropolis and the older quarters at its foot, and the light and heat are strong through the long summer. It is both an open-air museum and a working southern-European capital, with a nightlife and food scene to match.

## Highlights

The Acropolis carries the Parthenon and its temples above the city, paired with the modern Acropolis Museum below. The ancient Agora, the Roman market and Hadrian's Arch trace the classical city, while the Plaka and Monastiraki quarters tangle with shops, tavernas and the flea market. A climb up Lycabettus or Filopappou hill gives the wide view, and the port of Piraeus sends ferries to the islands.
