## Overview

Begun as a Norman motte-and-bailey to guard the approaches to London, the castle was rebuilt in stone and repeatedly enlarged, its Round Tower and State Apartments taking shape under successive monarchs and given a Gothic remodelling in the Georgian era. St George's Chapel within the walls is a masterpiece of English Gothic and a royal burial place.

## Description

It has been a working royal residence for over 900 years, used for state ceremonies and hosting foreign heads of state. A serious fire in 1992 destroyed part of the State Apartments, which were fully restored by 1997.

## History and legacy

Windsor Castle remains a principal residence of the monarch and a major visitor attraction. It is a living symbol of the continuity of the English and British crown.
