## Overview

The Pioneer is a set of three oil panels painted in 1904 by the Heidelberg School artist Frederick McCubbin. The three scenes tell the story of a family settling in the wild bush.

## Description

In the left panel a young couple pause before the forest; in the centre a home takes root on cleared land; in the right a grown town appears and a figure stands at a pioneer's grave. The green of the eucalypt forest sinks into soft light.

## History and legacy

The work symbolically depicts the settlers' story of pioneering and sacrifice and mirrored how Australians of the day saw themselves. It is held by the National Gallery of Victoria.
