Oracle bone inscriptions come from the late Shang capital Yin, near modern Anyang — the source of the dynasty's alternative name, Yin. The king list reconstructed from the oracle bones closely matches the later account in the Shiji.

## End and transition

The last king, Zhou (紂), was defeated by King Wu of Zhou at the Battle of Muye (c. 1046 BC), and the Zhou dynasty succeeded the Shang.
