## Overview

Under the Ottoman Empire, Turkish styles entered urban dress while the villages kept their own folk costume.

## Key garments and style

Men wore the white pleated fustanella skirt, an embroidered vest and a jacket; women wore richly embroidered regional dress (the foustani, the karagouna and others). Region and rank showed in the dress.

## Transition

Through the War of Independence begun in 1821, these folk costumes became national symbols of the new Greece.
