## Overview

As an Ottoman province, Egypt saw Turkish court styles mingle with native dress.

## Key garments and style

Men wore an open-fronted long robe (entari) or kaftan over a long shirt, with a sash and a turban or cap; women wore colourful dress at home and a covering garment and veil out of doors. Fabric and embroidery marked rank.

## Transition

In the 19th century, with Muhammad Ali's modernisation, Western influence and the Turkish cap (tarboosh) appeared in dress.
