Tailoring and leather craft, and family-run houses, were the strengths of postwar Italian dress.

## Key garments and style

In 1951 Giovanni Battista Giorgini's joint shows in Florence pushed Italian fashion onto the international market. Milan then became a fashion capital, and the names of Gucci, Ferragamo, Valentino, Armani, Versace and Prada made "Made in Italy" a byword for quality worldwide.

## Transition

Today Italy remains, with Paris, a capital of fashion, leading a world of luxury and craftsmanship.
