After independence in 1821, dress Westernised while folk costume was raised as a symbol of the nation.

## Key garments and style

The man's pleated fustanella skirt, adopted by the heroes of independence and the royal house, became the national dress; the Evzones who guard the presidential mansion still wear it. Everyday dress became Western, as elsewhere in Europe.
