## Overview

Through colonial rule, independence and modernisation, Egyptian dress became one in which Western, traditional and Islamic elements coexist.

## Key garments and style

In the cities Western dress became common, and the men's tarboosh fell out of use after the 1952 revolution. The loose galabeya continues as everyday wear in the countryside and among craftsmen, and women's dress widely combines Western clothes with Islamic dress such as the hijab.

Modern Egyptian dress keeps its own elements — the galabeya and modest dress — within global fashion.
