## Overview

In this age ruled by the Mamluks, a ruling class of slave-soldiers, dress reflected the authority of a military elite.

## Key garments and style

The elite wore long robes (qaba) and kaftans of silk and fine cloth with headgear according to rank and office. Alongside arms, heraldic blazons were used and court textiles were splendid, while townspeople wore plainer tunics and robes.

## Transition

With the Ottoman conquest of 1517, Ottoman Turkish styles entered dress.
