## Overview

A Confucian order governed dress, and a preference for white clothing earned Koreans the name "the white-clad people."

## Key garments and style

Women layered a short jeogori with a high, full chima; men wore a durumagi over baji and jeogori, with the gat when out. Officials bore an embroidered rank badge (hyungbae) on the chest and back of the robe. Ornaments such as the norigae developed, and in the 18th century the huge gache wig was restricted as extravagance.

## Transition

At the end of the 19th century, with the Korean Empire and the opening of the country, Western dress began to enter the court and officialdom.
