## What it was

The union brought together the territories of modern Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, and Panama under a single government. It was Bolívar's attempt to build a strong, unified Spanish American state.

## Role

Gran Colombia was central to the final campaigns of independence and to Bolívar's dream of continental unity. Deep regional rivalries and disputes over how to govern soon strained it.

## Fate

By 1831, Venezuela and Ecuador had seceded and the union dissolved into separate republics. Its collapse marked the failure of Bolívar's vision of a united Spanish America.
