The dress of Elam, an ancient civilisation in contact with Mesopotamia, survives on seals, statues and bronze figures.

## Key garments and style

Early on a tufted woollen garment (a kaunakes type) was worn; later, tiered garments and robes with fringed borders, with jewellery and dressed hair.

## Transition

As the Medes and the Achaemenids rose, the Iranian riding dress — trousers and a sleeved coat — reshaped the region's clothing.
