## Overview

Dress was an art of draping and fastening rather than tailoring, and its idealised folds were fixed forever in sculpture.

## Key garments and style

The basis was the chiton (Doric or Ionic) and peplos, wrapped and pinned or sewn at the shoulder and belted, with a himation over it; men wore the short chlamys cloak for travel or riding. Wool and linen were the materials, with dye and borders added.

## Transition

In the Hellenistic age after Alexander, dress grew more varied and elaborate.
