## Overview

Under roughly a thousand years of Chinese rule from Han to Tang, Chinese styles reached deep into dress.

## Key garments and style

Officials and the elite wore Chinese-style cross-collar robes (closing at the front) and silk, while the people kept practical native dress — the wrapped skirt, loincloth and breast-cloth. Chinese weaving and sericulture were also transmitted.

## Transition

When independence was regained in 938, the Vietnamese dynasties ordered their own dress while adopting Chinese-style court ceremonial.
