## Overview

At the court of Ayutthaya, which traded with the world, dress marked wealth and rank, and silk, gold and jewels were used.

## Key garments and style

Both sexes wore the chong kraben, women with a sabai from breast to shoulder. The court and nobility wore pha yok, cloth patterned with gold thread, its colour and design assigned by rank. Trade with Persia, Europe, China and Japan brought new fabrics and designs.

## Transition

After Ayutthaya fell in 1767, the Thonburi Kingdom carried on its tradition of dress.
