## Overview

The clay haniwa set around burial mounds are the main evidence. They show an upper garment (kinu) closed at the front and tied with cords, worn by men over gathered trousers and by women over a long pleated skirt.

## Key garments and style

Cut-and-sewn tailoring, cord fastenings and layered pieces reflect close contact with the Korean peninsula and China. Beaded necklaces and curved magatama jewels marked status.

## Transition

In the Asuka period this continental influence was formalized into a system of court ranks and regulated dress.
